| I had a book on SundarKānd in my library unattended which I opened just before Guruji’s talk series. I thought I knew Rāmayana and its main symbolism. I read somewhere the greatest barrier in the path of learning is “I already know” attitude, which was in my case to some extent. However I always eagerly wait for the yagnas. Guruji’s knack of putting great deep wisdom into simple palatable words is amazing. With all these thoughts I started listening to Guruji on Sundar Kānd. On the first day he explained the meaning of the name Sundar Kānd, the real meaning of Rām --bliss and the significance in our lives. I was bowled over by the definition of Sundar—beauty. Guruji explained the physical beauty is the external one, the true ornament of the beauty is virtue, then guruji got to even subtler explaination for beauty which is wisdom. Wisdom is the true gem of virtue. The wisdom shines with forgiveness that is the true essence of beauty. Guruji covered the definition from the grossest to the subtlest level that is physical beauty-virtue-wisdom-forgiveness. The other aspect I found interesting was about the team spirit that he brought out. How generally team goes through the stages of brain storming, blaim storming when something goes wrong and claim storming for the success ! Through the story, guruji pointed out the relationship between the leader and subordinates , and how common higher goal binds the team together and can achieve even most challenging targets. Guruji also explained spiritual significance of this chapter of the Rāmayana and how it is a wish-fulfilling chapter. These explanations once again reminded me of the richness and subtleness of our scriptures that we find in our Vedas, smritis & itihāsas. The challenges faced by the seeker of any walks of life—personal, professional or spiritual can take Hanumānji as a role model. His role has been elaborated in a beautiful story form in this chapter which was sung by Guruji in his melodious voice. Listening to Hanumanji’s greatness, humility, intelligence and devotion was like sipping chai latte in a café on a wet day…. So warm, relaxing and entertaining. By the end of the talk series, I did not only know the story but I felt it. My journey from knowing to feeling was so natural and relaxing that I did not even realise! Hari om! Deepa |
